How to Import Natural Stone from India: A Practical Guide for UK and US Buyers

The first time a buyer imports stone directly from India, they usually have the same three worries: will the quality match the sample, will it actually arrive when promised, and what happens if something goes wrong at customs. These are fair questions. This guide answers them plainly, based on how we actually work with importers who are new to sourcing from Rajasthan.

Start With a Sample — Always

This is not a formality. Stone varies by quarry, by season, and sometimes by the section of the quarry being actively worked. The grey sandstone we were shipping in January may have a slightly different tone to the batch quarried in March. Not dramatically — but enough to matter if you have already committed colour palettes to a client.

We ship free samples worldwide. Tell us which product and which finish, and we send physical samples within 3–5 working days. You test it, check it against your project requirements, and only once you are satisfied do you move to ordering.

Any supplier who pushes back on this, or charges a premium for samples before a first bulk order, is not a supplier you want to depend on for a large project.

Understanding the Export Process

Here is what happens between your order confirmation and the pallet arriving at your warehouse.

Step 1 — Order confirmation and production For standard sizes and finishes in stock, production lead time is typically 2–4 weeks. For custom sizes, carved pieces, or specific thickness calibration, allow 4–8 weeks.

Step 2 — Quality check and documentation Before the stone leaves our facility, it goes through quality inspection — checking dimensions, finish consistency, and that the batch matches your approved sample. We prepare all export documentation at this stage: Commercial Invoice, Packing List, Certificate of Origin, and Bill of Lading.

Step 3 — Container loading and shipping Stone is loaded into 20ft or 40ft containers. We palletise and crate properly — stone that moves in transit breaks at corners and edges. Our [packaging process](https://www.mooliramstones.com/packaging-slabs) is designed specifically for natural stone export, not general cargo.

Shipping via Maersk or Hapag-Lloyd to UK ports typically takes 18–25 days. USA East Coast is around 22–30 days. UAE is 10–14 days.

Step 4 — Customs clearance at destination Natural stone falls under HS Code 6802 (worked monumental or building stone) or 6801 (unworked), depending on finish. UK import duty on natural stone from India is currently 0% under the UK-India trade framework. USA duties vary by product sub-code — we advise on the applicable HS code for your specific order so you know what to expect before the container sails.

FOB, CIF, or Door-to-Door — Which Shipping Term?

FOB (Free On Board): We load the container at the Indian port. Everything after that — ocean freight, insurance, destination port charges, customs clearance, inland delivery — is your responsibility. FOB gives you more control over freight costs but more complexity.

CIF (Cost, Insurance, Freight): We handle ocean freight and insurance to the destination port. You handle customs clearance and inland delivery.

Door-to-Door: We handle everything end-to-end through our [logistics partners](https://www.mooliramstones.com/global-delivery-network). Simplest option, minimal effort on your side.

For first-time importers, we generally recommend CIF or door-to-door on the first order. Once you are comfortable with the process, many buyers switch to FOB for better rates on larger recurring orders.

Payment Terms for New Relationships

We typically work on a 50% advance, 50% before container loading for new buyers. Once we have worked together on two or three orders, we can discuss more flexible terms including Letter of Credit for larger orders.

We accept Wire Transfer (T/T), Letter of Credit (L/C), Visa, Mastercard, and PayPal.

What If Something Goes Wrong?

When you receive the container, inspect the goods before signing off with the transport company. Any visible damage should be noted on the delivery receipt and photographed before you move anything. This documentation is what allows a freight insurance claim to proceed smoothly.

We have been doing this for seven decades. When problems come up, we deal with them directly. Our long-term buyers stay with us partly because of price and quality, and partly because they know that if something goes wrong, we pick up the phone.
